Today an important project is being carried out at Reynosa Airport, it is the construction of the new terminal building; a project that emerged thanks to the growth that air traffic has had in recent years from this border city.
One of the factors that has driven this growth is the important flow that exists from other states of the country for business tourism, there is also another important one from the Valley of Texas to Mexico, a market in which OMA also provides the service.
The closing of 2019 was positive, as more than 488,000 passengers were registered; that, although it has not been the highest year, since the highest was 2016 where they culminated with approximately 566,000 passengers.
"We had been dragging since 2015 with figures exceeding 500,000 passengers, numbers that allowed the development of a larger airport," said Mauricio Moncada Martínez, administrator of Reynosa Airport, Tamaulipas.
Currently, the spaces at the airport are limited and in a way it was sought not to complicate the comfort to which the airport is committed to providing its users and passengers, which is why a new terminal emerged.
The terminal is designed to provide service to nearly 1 million passengers in the year, which is why they are preparing to start working with various airlines to bring more options from Reynosa and raise passenger numbers.
During 2015 and 2016, when the passenger figures were above 500,000, there was the service of airlines such as Aeromar, Volaris and Interjet; These airlines withdrew from the city in 2017 due to operational issues; but now the talks with the airlines have been resumed thanks to the space that the airport will have to receive them.
"We want the Reynosense to have good options on flights from his city, we want to avoid having to move to another airport near the area," said Moncada.
Currently, from Reynosa there are two options for travel, one of them is Aeromexico, which manages the destination CDMX and Viva Aerobus that offers various destinations such as Cancun, Guadalajara and Veracruz; flights that have had a high occupancy from Reynosa, Tamaulipas.
"This subject to what may come in the future with the negotiations and thanks to the support we have been having from the state authorities," said Mauricio.
A NEW TERMINAL
Work on the construction of the new terminal at Reynosa Airport recorded - until December 2019 - a 90% progress. Moncada explained that the construction of a new terminal requires a degree of complexity because of the technology that has been installed and that it has to meet high standards of safety and quality, aspects that are required by law.
"It is a large building, the current terminal has 2,608 m2 and 7,500 m2 are contemplated in the new construction," said Mauricio Moncada.
This is a considerable growth and is a first world terminal, the new Reynosa terminal will be an iconic work of Tamaulipas for the level of architecture, design and cutting-edge equipment that will provide the comfort of modernity in which OMA / Reynosa Airport she is engaged.
