The Nuevo Manzanillo-Cuyutlán Port has officially commenced its expansion project, which will increase its area from 450 to 1,880 hectares, positioning it among the largest ports in Latin America and within the top 15 globally in terms of capacity.
The project, scheduled for completion by 2030, represents a total investment of 63 billion pesos, combining public and private funding.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo inaugurated the construction of the new port facility, which will include the installation of six electric cranes with a 65-ton capacity each and its own thermoelectric plant. The main infrastructure is expected to be operational by the end of her administration.
The port expansion will also be accompanied by improvements to surrounding infrastructure, including a second access route to the Manzanillo Port and an expansion of the Colima-Manzanillo Highway, designed to streamline the flow of goods.
“This project will drive the region’s economic development and strengthen connectivity with the United States, making Manzanillo Port a key gateway for international trade,” stated Indira Vizcaíno, Governor of Colima.
