Coahuila emerges as a powerhouse in automotive production

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), last year, auto production in Mexico increased by 14.23% annually, reaching three million 779 thousand 234 units. This is nearly 471 thousand more than the three million 308 thousand 346 units manufactured in 2022 and almost 30 thousand more than those in 2019, before the onset of Covid-19.
In the third quarter of 2023, the states with the highest contribution to the total value of exports were Coahuila de Zaragoza (12.8%), Chihuahua (12.1%), Baja California (10.6%), Nuevo León (10.5%), and Tamaulipas (6.2%). Together, these entities accounted for 52.1 percent.
Total value
Regarding the significance of Coahuila in the automotive industry, in December of last year, it contributed an amount of 17 billion 243 million dollars (mdd), representing 12.8% of national sales totaling 134 billion 917.5 mdd.
On the other hand, in the report for the July-September quarter of 2023, Coahuila also stood out in the subsector of transportation equipment manufacturing, accounting for a total participation in the total value of national exports of 40.9%, with a value of 55 billion 224.2 mdd.
Exports
The states with the highest contribution in this activity were Coahuila de Zaragoza (21.5%), Guanajuato (9.9%), Nuevo León (8.9%), Chihuahua (8.6%), and Puebla (8.2%). These entities concentrated 57.1% of the value of these exports.
As for the automakers installed in Coahuila, General Motors reported a production of 722 thousand 631 units, 2.8% less than in 2022, while its exports increased by 3.9% to 721 thousand 886 units.
On the other hand, Stellantis recorded 467 thousand 542 assembled units, a growth of 12.7% compared to 2022, while the exported vehicles totaled 412 thousand 892, an increase of 14.4 percent. The figures for both automakers include their operations at the national level.
