Tijuana reports increase in industrial spaces despite pandemic

Even with the Covid-19 pandemic as a destabilizing context, Tijuana was able to have a boom in terms of the creation of new industrial spaces and occupation, as the dynamics of the companies remained active.

In the words of Carlos Jaramillo Silva, coordinator of the Industrial Developers sector of Deitac (Economic and Industrial Development of Tijuana) , this was demonstrated with the construction of six new industrial parks in the city during this 2020, going from 69 to 75 infrastructures .

From having 69 parks in 2019 today there are 75, which represent an increase of 5.6 million square meters, as it increased from 70.3 million to 75.9 million square meters.

The leader stressed that even though 2020 was an atypical and complicated year for the productive sector worldwide, the dynamics of the industry in Baja California, mainly in Tijuana, remained active.

This is thanks to the demand in sectors such as the manufacturing of medical devices, electronics and aerospace.

He even mentioned that Tijuana has one of the lowest vacancy rates of spaces nationwide, being positioned below 3%, which means that industrial buildings are in demand and are leased quickly.

New operations and extensions

In this sense, Jaramillo Silva mentioned that during the first four months of the year there were 12 expansions of already established companies, for a total investment of 2 million dollars.

For the second four-month period, three new foreign investments and seven expansions were reported, for an amount of 3 million dollars, while in the third four months, five new investments and six expansions were noted, for 5 million dollars.

The coordinator and advisor of Deitac, the investment promoter in Tijuana, pointed out that the origin of these new investments comes, for the most part, from the United States, followed by Mexico, China, South Korea and Australia.

A large part of these results throughout the year, affirmed Carlos Jaramillo, is due to the promotion and retention work that has been carried out by participating in national and international fairs and events, in virtual mode, which has helped Baja California has a greater reach in terms of contacts.

Such is the case of the alliances that were generated with Israel, a country with which it seeks to generate business in niches such as energy, water, agribusiness and medical devices.

Industrial map to support the investor

In addition, the coordinator of Industrial Developments highlighted the fact that Tijuana has a map that shows the level of absorption of spaces, which is renewed every three months.

"It is an essential tool with which we help the investor to make better decisions, since it contains all the information regarding locations, types of spaces, type of industry, among other issues," he said.

Finally, Jaramillo Silva mentioned that it is a quick guide with which managers can make a decision regarding expansion or investment in the city, efficiently and effectively, and in a short time.
