Ternium SA announced that its new slab steel mill will have a total investment of 3.2 billion dollars , a project that aims to integrate operations in the North American region, implementing high technology to meet the decarbonization commitment by 2030.

The new plant will be built and integrated into the company's existing downstream facilities in Pesquería, Nuevo León. This new investment will make it possible to manufacture the highest quality steels for the automotive market.

With this third stage of Ternium  in the region,  construction is expected to begin in December 2023, with the start of operations expected during the first half of 2026 of the Ternium Pesquería Industrial Center.

With its stage 3, the Ternium Pesquería Industrial Center is consolidated as the most modern and important in the region and the company. The new state-of-the-art facility will complement the company's new hot rolling mill at Pesquería , which began operations in mid-2021, as well as its downstream project on the same site, which is currently under construction.

The steel shop includes a 300-tonne EAF furnace with Consteel system , two secondary metallurgy furnaces with 300-tonne capacity each, one RH vacuum system , and a two-line continuous caster .

It will also be equipped with the latest technologies to accelerate Ternium 's ongoing commitment to sustainability, including carbon capture capabilities and the readiness to switch from natural gas to hydrogen for direct reduced iron production. Additionally, all the water used in the production process of the new plant will come from treated wastewater for industrial use.

Likewise, the steel mill will have a raw materials yard, where the handling of minerals will be under the scheme of domes and closed belts. In addition, the project includes the construction of a yard for handling scrap and a port for unloading pellets.

It should be noted that it will use Tenova technology , which allows the capture of CO2, as in the three current direct reduction modules in Mexico. This steel mill will be prepared to supply itself with green hydrogen when it is feasible.

Máximo Vedoya, CEO of Ternium , expressed that they are excited to start this new upstream production capacity project in Pesquería, Nuevo León.

“This decision is a significant milestone for our company, as we continue to integrate our downstream manufacturing capabilities to serve all of our customers in Mexico, while consolidating our position as a leading player in the USMCA region.”

He said that the value chain in Mexico is addressing and responding quickly to the growth opportunities presented by nearshoring of manufacturing capacity.

“We are confident that the country's skilled labor and favorable business environment will enable us to achieve our ambitious goals. We look forward to working with the government, communities and other stakeholders to continue to foster economic growth, employment opportunities and prosperity in the region.”
