Grupo México is planning to generate new investments for an approximate amount of 3.1 billion dollars for the refining of metals in Sonora and to improve the electrical infrastructure for a mine in Baja California.

This announcement was made by Xavier García, executive vice president of Grupo México, who explained that the investment plan is for six years , and includes the expansion of 2.3 billion dollars in the existing smelting capacity in Sonora and 815 million dollars for the implementation of new power lines in the Baja California peninsula.

In addition, he said that almost 9,000 million dollars will be invested until 2027 , including the 2,800 million previously announced for its El Arco copper mine , which would anchor the investment in Baja California; while the rest will be distributed in additional infrastructure, being two other mines and new zinc refining capacity.

"The great potential that Baja California has cannot be developed if it is not with electricity and the proposed energy infrastructure includes a transmission line 500 kilometers long," he said.

Likewise, Grupo México expects its copper production to fall to 1.5%, due to the decrease in obtaining from Peru. Therefore, a new copper production was confirmed that would come into operation in key mines, for the second quarter of 2023 , including an additional 36,000 tons per year at its El Pilar mine in Sonora and 30,000 tons per year at Buenavista, while El Arco will produce 190,000 tons per year as of 2027.
