To improve the capacity to manufacture disc brakes and electronic brakes for the parking system, Continental will expand its automotive plant located in San Luis Potosí.
The investment of close to 60 million euros ( about 72 million dollars ) will serve to enable around 20,000 square meters of space for a production floor, adding to the 23,000 that the plant currently has.
“The decision to locate the manufacture of these high-tech components at the San Luis Potosí plant is a strong sign of Continental's confidence in Mexico and especially in the region. The products we manufacture here are state-of-the-art technology that offers end users significant improvements in functionality and safety ”, shared Víctor Hernández, director of Continental San Luis Potosí.
In addition to the fitting out of the production floor, a High Bay warehouse will be built which will have 28-meter-high racks, space for raw materials and finished products.
This warehouse will be fully automated, as it will use storage management software that will connect a system of conveyors, elevators and racks for optimal material handling and storage, being the first of its kind in Mexico.
With this expansion, the San Luis Potosí automotive plant will be the largest in the world for the HBS ( Hydraulic Brake Systems ) business unit.
This expansion, which has already begun with its construction, is expected to be fully operational in October 2022.
The director of the German company stressed that this project was largely due to the geographical, economic and well-being conditions existing in the state of San Luis Potosí, in addition to the fact that the region offers a favorable ecosystem of supply and industry, centers of research, as well as the quality and quantity of graduates from both public and private universities.
This project is expected to create around 350 new jobs in the next three years, which will join the 650 employees that the San Luis Potosí plant currently has.
These new jobs will be subject to the training and development programs that Continental currently has and are taught through its Technical Training Center, inaugurated in 2019.
Juan Manuel Carreras López, governor of the state, was present in the official announcement, who said that this growth is very important for San Luis Potosí, above all, because this announcement occurs when the health contingency due to Covid-19 continues, which is a reflection of the confidence that companies have to invest in the entity, which will have an impact on more and better jobs that will provide a better quality of life.
Continental in Mexico currently has about 25,000 employees located in 21 locations (manufacturing plants, financial centers, offices, and research and development centers) in 13 states of the Mexican Republic.
In San Luis Potosí, Continental has more than 45 years of history and employs more than 3,000 employees located in four manufacturing plants and a financial center.
