Yokohama, the world-renowned tire manufacturer, is set to build its first manufacturing plant in Mexico with an investment of $380 million. This strategic move marks a significant milestone for the company and its global expansion strategy.
The Japanese company's goal is to create jobs in Mexico and drive economic development to improve societal well-being. Additionally, this investment will strengthen commercial ties between Mexico and Japan.
Masataka Yamaishi, CEO of Yokohama, emphasized that Saltillo is one of the most competitive cities in the country. Since 2019, the company has conducted studies to select the right location. The new plant, located in Derramadero, will occupy an area of 610,000 square meters and allow for future expansion.
Yokohama's commitment to sustainable practices extends to all its processes. The new plant will feature a green area, a water treatment plant, and renewable energy sources to optimize daily usage. The company's goal is to achieve zero carbon emissions for environmental health.
Jeff Barna, president and CEO of Yokohama, described the Saltillo factory as one of the most advanced in the world. Barna noted that the plant will primarily serve the North American market, which will enhance customer proximity and ensure excellence and efficiency in services.
"We will ensure tire supply in the region, promote economic growth, and provide local customers with a unique experience that only Yokohama can offer. We are ready to produce 5 million products annually and expand the Yokohama brand worldwide," added Barna.
Yokohama operates 35 manufacturing plants globally, spread across three continents (America, Asia, and Europe). Its products cater to various markets, including light and heavy vehicles, the food industry, agriculture, and entertainment.
The Derramadero factory will be equipped with unique machinery for the North American region, capable of producing high-quality products. This focus on quality and innovation strengthens Yokohama's position as a leader in its industry.
