Top 5 Largest Vehicle Manufacturers in Mexico

Mexico has solidified its position among the top 10 largest vehicle producers globally, ranking seventh behind countries like China, the United States, Japan, India, South Korea, and Germany.
In 2024, Mexico produced 3,989,403 light vehicles, marking a 5.56% increase compared to 2023, which recorded 3,779,151 units, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). Of the nearly 3.9 million vehicles manufactured between January and December 2024, five brands contributed 69% of the total production (2,747,527 units): General Motors (GM), Nissan, Stellantis, Ford, and Volkswagen.
General Motors accelerated vehicle production in Mexico during 2024. According to Inegi, the U.S. company led light vehicle production, reaching 889,072 units—a 23% increase compared to 2023.
In Mexico, GM operates manufacturing plants in Ramos Arizpe (Coahuila), Silao (Guanajuato), and San Luis Potosí (SLP), employing over 25,000 people. In 2023, GM produced 722,631 units and made purchases from over 600 suppliers in Mexico totaling $28 billion.
Nissan followed GM with 669,941 units produced at its manufacturing plants (two in Aguascalientes and one in Morelos), an 8.8% increase compared to the 615,751 vehicles manufactured in 2023.
This year, the Japanese company expanded its portfolio by starting production of the new Nissan Kicks 2025 and celebrated the milestone of assembling 16 million vehicles in Mexico.
Stellantis ranked third with 419,426 units manufactured at its facilities in Saltillo, Coahuila, and Toluca, State of Mexico. The European firm reduced its production by 10.3% compared to the 467,459 units achieved in 2023.
Among Stellantis’ milestones in Mexico this year was the launch of electric vehicle production at its Toluca plant.
Ford increased its production by 5.9% in 2024, manufacturing 386,776 units compared to 365,365 in 2023. The U.S. automaker announced a $273 million investment in its Irapuato, Guanajuato plant to produce Primary Motor Units for its Mustang Mach-E, which is manufactured at its Cuautitlán Izcalli plant.
Volkswagen secured the fifth spot with 382,312 vehicles manufactured at its Puebla plant, representing a 9.5% year-over-year increase compared to 349,227 units in 2023, according to Inegi.
This year, the German automaker began manufacturing new models at its Puebla plant, including the Jetta, Taos, and Tiguan. The third generation of the Tiguan launched in December, featuring EA888 2.0L engines (150kW and 200kW) produced at its facilities in Mexico and Guanajuato.
Investing in Mexico
Other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with significant production plans in Mexico include KIA and Toyota.
In 2024, KIA invested $408 million in Nuevo León to expand its operational capacity.
Toyota announced a $1.45 billion investment to strengthen operations at its plants in Baja California and Guanajuato for producing the next-generation Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV).
Both companies reported production volumes of 270,000 and 245,000 vehicles, respectively, from January to December 2024.
