The American electric car manufacturer , Tesla , will expand its operations with a gigafactory in Nuevo León, Mexico, where the next generation vehicles of the automotive brand will be manufactured.
During Tesla's Investor Day 2023 event , Elon Musk , the company's founder, said the most important announcement was the new investment he will make in the country.
“ This is probably the most significant announcement of the day, we are excited to announce that we are going to build a gigafactory in Mexico, and obviously we will have a grand opening. This is part of our plan to continue expanding production in all of our existing factories: California, Nevada, Texas, and obviously Shanghai. So we plan to increase production in all factories. The new gigafactory in Mexico will be complementary to the production of all the other factories. We are not moving or substituting production, it is simply about expanding total global production ,” he stated.
Likewise, during the event it was commented that the gigafactory built in Shanghai took 9.5 months , so it is expected that the one in Mexico will be ready in less time, because they learned from mistakes and construction times.
At Investor Day , the company's sustainability plans were discussed, which will be divided into five work areas that will reduce the impact of the environmental footprint, allowing it to be totally neutral by 2050. The areas are: maximizing the use of energy renewables, increase production of electric vehicles, switch to heat pumps in homes, businesses and industries, electrify the delivery of high-temperature heat and hydrogen, and lastly, sustainable fuel planes and canisters.
Mexico, a key piece for the development of Tesla
10 years ago, Tesla produced its first electric car, the Model 3 without autonomy , only value engineering in that year (2012); however, the company has invested heavily in technological development and innovation in its manufacturing processes.
The event announced the new era of its assembly lines, which will cover the entire factory, allowing collaborators to have more space, ease, and ergonomics to place vehicle components and auto parts, as well as a fully automated line. This new process will reduce the cost of production by 50% and 40% energy.
It was through his social networks that Samuel García Sepúlveda , governor of Nuevo León, announced that he traveled to Austin, Texas, to be part of Tesla's Investor Day 2023 , where Elon Musk confirmed the construction of the gigafactory in the state.
