Tamaulipas to Expand Nuevo Laredo III International Bridge to 18 Lanes for Cargo Traffic
February 11, 2026
The state of Tamaulipas is moving forward with a major border infrastructure project aimed at strengthening its role in North American trade. Authorities have announced the expansion of the Puente Internacional Nuevo Laredo III, one of the most important commercial crossings between Mexico and the United States, as part of a broader strategy to support sustainable economic growth and international commerce.
Increased Cargo Capacity at a Strategic Trade Corridor
The project includes widening the existing bridge structure from eight to ten lanes and constructing a new parallel structure with eight additional lanes. Once completed, the crossing will feature a total of 18 lanes dedicated exclusively to cargo traffic, significantly increasing operational capacity at Mexico’s leading land port of entry for freight.
This corridor handles close to half of the country’s cross-border cargo truck traffic, positioning the World Trade Bridge in Nuevo Laredo as a critical logistics node for regional and international supply chains. The expansion responds to sustained growth in freight volumes and rising demand for more efficient cross-border operations.
Logistics Competitiveness and Industrial Impact
By increasing lane capacity, the project is expected to reduce wait times, lower transportation costs, and improve the overall efficiency of cross-border trade flows. These improvements directly benefit key productive sectors, including manufacturing, automotive, electronics, and agribusiness, all of which depend on reliable and time-sensitive logistics.
The modernization of border infrastructure also strengthens Tamaulipas’ standing as a strategic gateway for trade between Mexico and the United States. Enhanced operational capacity at Nuevo Laredo supports the performance of the broader northeast industrial corridor, where export-oriented manufacturing and binational supply chains play a central role.
As global supply chains continue to prioritize resilience and speed, the expansion of the Nuevo Laredo III International Bridge stands out as a critical logistics enabler, aligning infrastructure capacity with the scale and pace of North American trade.
