South Texas Beckons Swedish Investors: A Showcase of Advanced Manufacturing and Nearshoring Potential

The McAllen Economic Development Corporation (McAllen EDC) and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) hosted a delegation of Swedish entrepreneurs to explore opportunities for industrial collaboration and investment between Sweden and South Texas.

During the visit, the competitive advantages of the region and its skilled workforce were highlighted by the hosts. The Swedish entrepreneurs, including Martin Johansson, Philip Skagerholm, and Patrik Johanson, emphasized the advanced technology, robotics, and autonomous methods used in their manufacturing processes.

The South Texas Council for Economic Progress (Costep) leaders participated as guests of honor, promoting the region as an attractive nearshoring destination. Ralph Garcia, Vice President of International Business Recruitment at McAllen EDC, spoke about the proximity and cooperation with Mexico, enhancing the manufacturing processes in South Texas.

Josh Vázquez, Director of Workforce at McAllen EDC, highlighted the academic and professional programs available for local students and professionals, equipping them with the necessary industry skills. Susie Flores, Director of Business Recruitment at McAllen EDC, shared success stories of foreign companies established in the region, promoting nearshoring.

Mark Garcia, Executive Vice President of McAllen EDC, underscored the interest and coordination of local business organizations to attract investments from Sweden. Adam Gonzalez, CEO of Costep, and Rick Carrera, Director of Economic Development, emphasized the support provided to investors, including tours and meetings to meet their needs.

Representing UTRGV, James Li Pi, Director of the Center for Innovation in Advanced Manufacturing and Cyber Systems, expressed interest in promoting learning and professionalization programs aligned with the manufacturing trends required by Swedish investors. Ron Garza and Professor Mostafa Malk highlighted the success of foreign companies in the region, focusing on automation, new technologies, and robotics.
