Sonora breaks historic export record and exceeds US$28 billion
May 19, 2026
Sonora reached the highest export level in its history during 2025, registering US$28.61 billion, a figure driven by the growth of advanced manufacturing and industrial development linked to the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan. The result positioned the state as one of the most dynamic economies along Mexico’s northern border.
Sonora Plan accelerates industrial exports and advanced manufacturing
According to INEGI figures, during the fourth quarter of 2025 the state recorded annual export growth of 9.1%, placing Sonora as the border state with the strongest progress in this indicator. This performance was supported by strategic sectors such as automotive, aerospace, electronics and computing.
Export growth also reflected the expansion of the manufacturing industry in the state. While manufacturing exports reached US$15.02 billion in 2021, by 2025 the figure had increased to US$22.98 billion, consolidating Sonora as one of the country’s main industrial hubs.
Governor Alfonso Durazo stated that the state’s economic growth has strengthened activities related to manufacturing, mining and agribusiness. “We have consolidated the state’s economic growth over these four years, positioning ourselves as a national benchmark in the main economic activities,” he said.
Advanced manufacturing drives economic growth in Sonora
The figures also show the strengthening of industrial chains linked to company relocation and nearshoring in Mexico. The expansion of technology and manufacturing sectors has allowed Sonora to increase its participation in high-value-added exports to North America.
Among the industries with the strongest growth are those related to advanced manufacturing, automotive production, aerospace components, electronics and computing, activities that are part of the priority sectors promoted by the Sonora Plan to attract investment and accelerate the industrialization process.
Sonora’s export performance comes in a context where several states in northern Mexico are competing to attract industrial projects related to energy, electromobility and technology. With the growth recorded in 2025, Sonora strengthened its position as a manufacturing and export platform within Mexico’s industrial corridor.
