Smurfit Westrock has broken ground on its new manufacturing facility in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, marking the start of a USD 65 million investment aimed at expanding the company’s footprint in northwest Mexico. The project is designed to strengthen regional supply for sustainable packaging solutions and support industries with growing production volumes.

A Strategic Expansion to Serve Northwest Mexico

The facility will include corrugated, micro-corrugated, and high-graphic folding carton lines, with operations scheduled to begin in early 2027. According to the company, the new plant integrates advanced technology to boost operational efficiency and meet demand from sectors such as beer, food, and beverages—industries where packaging performance and reliability are essential.

The project also incorporates environmental standards aligned with Smurfit Westrock’s global sustainability strategy. Construction and start-up activities are expected to generate more than 800 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to economic development in Cajeme and surrounding municipalities.

Commitment to Innovation and Sustainable Growth

Jorge Alberto Ángel, CEO of Smurfit Westrock Mexico, emphasized the company’s long-term vision during the ceremony. “The construction of this plant reaffirms our commitment to economic development, not only in Sonora but across Mexico.
