QSM Semiconductors is making significant strides in building the team and infrastructure necessary for chip manufacturing in Mexico.
Alejandro Franco, co-founder and chairman of the QSM Semiconductors Board, presented the company's progress during the unveiling of the Master Plan for Semiconductor Industry Development in Mexico 2024–2030. Among the key updates, he announced the signing of a European agreement to acquire the manufacturing equipment for their Mexican chip plant, with its groundbreaking scheduled for the first quarter of 2025 in Querétaro.
“With this, QSM Semiconductors positions itself to drive the semiconductor industry in Mexico. Our vision is centered on technological independence, strengthening local infrastructure, and fostering an integrated ecosystem for semiconductor design and production,” Franco stated during the event organized by the Mexico-U.S. Semiconductor Collaboration Forum.
In addition to the planned plant, QSM Semiconductors already operates an Engineering Center (CEI) and a Design Center (CEDI) in Querétaro. These centers design and develop innovative technological solutions, leveraging the expertise of Mexican engineers who are part of the company.
Currently, QSM Semiconductors is in the process of acquiring equipment and setting up its legacy node chip manufacturing plant. This initiative is expected to generate highly skilled jobs in fields such as engineering, mechatronics, solid-state physics, and advanced electronics.
The Master Plan for Semiconductor Industry Development in Mexico 2024–2030 represents a binational collaboration, bringing together leading companies, officials from the U.S. Embassy, members of more than 20 sector-related associations, and academics from both nations.
Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s Secretary of Economy, highlighted the importance of this effort, stating: “Having an advanced semiconductor industry is essential for Mexico to achieve the high levels of development we aspire to. This is decisive. We must succeed together with the United States to address this challenge.”
