The Port of Brownsville, Texas, has set a new record for commercial maritime cargo levels, climbing to the 50th position among the 150 U.S. seaports. According to the 2022 Annual Report from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the port handled 9.1 million tons of maritime cargo in 2022, up from 8.9 million tons in 2021, moving up from the 55th position it held in 2021. "Rising to the 50th spot among the nation's top seaports is a significant achievement. Larger cargo volumes mean big business for our region and the state of Texas," said William Dietrich, Interim Director and CEO of the port. He also emphasized the port's commitment to providing better infrastructure through various growth projects to support the business and logistics sectors.

The growth trend at the Port of Brownsville has remained consistent, with total cargo tonnage increasing by 17% in the last year (2023), reaching 17.8 million tons compared to 15.2 million tons in 2022. Additionally, 2023 saw a 46% increase in vessel traffic, with 2,561 ships, up from 1,754 in 2022.

Currently, the main products traded at the Port of Brownsville include steel, liquid bulk products, and wind energy components, handled through both import and export processes. The port's competitive advantages include its strategic location between Mexico and the United States and being the only deep-water port in the region.

Notable growth projects at the maritime terminal include the expansion of the Brazos Island Harbor Channel. This project aims to deepen Brownsville's 17-mile-long navigation channel from 42 to 52 feet to accommodate larger vessels with heavier cargo and improve safety levels. Another significant development is the new 118-acre industrial park, which offers immediate availability for various companies, including those in manufacturing. Additionally, the Rio Grande LNG plant by NextDecade, the largest investment of its kind in the U.S. with over $18.4 billion in its first phase, is under construction.
