Pharr International Bridge Expansion Boosts Cross-Border Trade Efficiencies
In his latest "State of the City" address, Mayor Ambrosio Hernández highlighted the ongoing expansion of the Pharr International Bridge as a pivotal project aimed at streamlining commercial traffic between Mexico and the United States.
Hernández underscored the bridge's significance as the leading gateway for agricultural product crossings along the entire border, with over 65% originating from Mexico. He also emphasized its critical role in facilitating the transit of electronics and various manufactured goods.
"The economic development of the city of Pharr relies on the daily trade generated through this bridge. Currently, a comprehensive infrastructure master plan is underway to provide more space for cargo units, enhancing trade exchanges and bringing opportunities for economic development, jobs, and efficiency for industries," stated Hernández.
New Investments
The expansion of the Pharr International Bridge entails a joint investment of $135 million from Mexican and U.S. authorities. Hernández underscored the importance of this binational relationship for attracting new investments and generating employment.
"It is essential to create new avenues to handle the influx of trade from Mexico. Hence, we are forging alliances with other cities to unite in a single international corridor. Additionally, we have projects for the intersection of I-69, State Highway 365, and Military Highway, benefiting the entire Pharr community," he added.
The initiatives undertaken by the Pharr Economic Development Corporation (Pharr EDC) were highlighted as key contributors to attracting new businesses, creating jobs, and supporting the workforce.
Quality of Life
Hernández emphasized international support through meetings to promote the growth of businesses and industries, focusing on education, quality of life, and incentives. As part of growth alliances for the region, mayors from neighboring cities, along with authorities and representatives, attended the address. Notable figures included Javier Villalobos from McAllen, Mario Garza from San Juan, David Moreno from Donna, J.R Garza from Alamo, Isidro Casanova from La Joya, and Óscar Montoya from Mercedes.
Representatives from Edinburg, commissioners, senators, and officials from Hidalgo County also participated in the "State of the City" report. The event attracted entrepreneurs and leaders from the southern Texas and northern Tamaulipas regions.
