The regions of Mexico including Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Hidalgo are collectively exporting $40 billion USD worth of products and services directly and indirectly related to the automotive industry, boasting a workforce of 13.97 million active individuals.
Recognizing the significance of the automotive sector in this area of the country, the Metropolitan Automotive Cluster was established, with Elisa Crespo Ferrer serving as its president and receiving support from the Secretaries of Economic Development of the three states: Fadlala Akabani (Mexico City), Laura González (State of Mexico), and Carlos Henkel of Hidalgo. Additionally, key companies from the former Automotive Cluster of the State of Mexico, such as Siemens, JSP, and ZF, are also part of this initiative.
With over a decade of experience, the cluster has been instrumental in fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, as highlighted by Ramiro Escobedo, CEO of JSP and Chair of the Manufacturing Committee of the Metropolitan Automotive Cluster. He outlined three key challenges: infrastructure, human resources, and energy, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues to ensure the continued growth of the automotive industry.
Carlos Henkel, Secretary of Economic Development of Hidalgo, emphasized the presence of major automotive companies in the region, such as Giant Motors and ELAW-FAW, and the state's focus on emerging areas like electromobility. He stressed the importance of collaboration and business opportunities in driving further growth.
Furthermore, the event served as the platform to introduce the PRO MEXICO INDUSTRY platform, a search tool for the industrial sector featuring strategic mapping of the country's zones. Sergio Gracias, President and Founder of Mexico Industry, encouraged entrepreneurs and government officials to join this initiative.
Cluster initiatives drive sectoral development globally, facilitating increased productivity, competitiveness, and balance among companies. Elisa Crespo, President of the Metropolitan Automotive Cluster, expressed gratitude for the participation of leading automotive industry companies in the preparation session for the upcoming general assembly.
Alberto Bustamante, Cluster Technical Advisor, shared statistics indicating Mexico's significant role in vehicle production, with a 14% increase resulting in 3.7 million vehicles manufactured. The domestic market saw a 24% growth in light vehicle sales compared to 2022, with an increasing focus on promoting Mexican manufacturing.
Moreover, the production of electric vehicles in Mexico surged, with 109,696 units in 2023, led by models like the Ford Mustang Mach E and Blazer EV. The sector is expected to grow by over 30% in 2024, signaling a promising future.
Mexico's dominance in heavy vehicle exports was highlighted, with 222,814 units exported in 2023, primarily to the United States. The country also stands out in the automotive parts sector, ranking fourth globally with $120 billion USD in exports, with 90% destined for the United States.
In conclusion, collaboration among stakeholders, regional initiatives, and the focus on emerging sectors like electromobility position Mexico as a key player in the global automotive industry, driving economic growth and innovation.
