Mexico's manufacturing sector grew 1.4% year-over-year in May 2025, remaining resilient despite declines in mining, energy, and construction.

In May 2025, Mexico’s industrial activity grew by 0.6% month-over-month, according to seasonally adjusted figures from the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity (IMAI) published by INEGI. The construction sector led the increase with a 2.8% rise compared to April.

In addition to construction, electricity generation, water, and gas supply activities posted a 0.4% monthly gain, while the manufacturing industry recorded a modest 0.1% uptick. In contrast, mining declined by 1.1%, weighing down the overall performance of the index.

Manufacturing Sector Sustains Annual Growth

On a year-over-year basis, manufacturing output expanded by 1.4%, making it the only major industrial sector to post steady growth compared to May 2024. Key performing subsectors included electronic equipment manufacturing (4.2%) and electrical accessories (0.2%), with a notable 26.4% surge in the "other manufacturing industries" category.

Mining, on the other hand, continued its downward trend with an annual drop of 8.4%, particularly impacted by a more than 34% contraction in related services. The energy sector also declined by 3.8%, while construction saw a 1.0% year-over-year decrease.

Within construction, building activity grew by 5.0% annually, and specialized construction work increased by 1.8%. These gains helped partially offset a steep 24.2% decline in civil engineering projects, reflecting a shift in the balance among construction segments.

Mixed Results in Year-to-Date Performance

From January to May 2025, overall industrial activity showed a cumulative 1.4% decline compared to the same period in 2024. While construction fell by 1.6% and mining contracted by 8.8%, manufacturing remained steady. Some industrial subsectors, such as petroleum-related product manufacturing and printing and related industries, reported positive year-to-date results.

Mexico's Manufacturing Sector Remains Resilient Amid Sectoral Declines

Despite weaknesses in sectors such as mining and energy, Mexican manufacturing continues to serve as a key pillar of the national economy. Its resilience reinforces Mexico’s position as a strategic hub for industrial production in North America.
