With the inauguration of its new Distribution Center (CEDIS) in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mercado Libre expanded its footprint in northwestern Mexico as part of an annual investment of USD 5 million in the state. This milestone marks the company’s first logistics center in Sonora and further strengthens its national network, which now includes 14 distribution centers across Mexico. The expansion improves delivery times, expands regional routes, and supports the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region.

In the presence of Sonora’s Secretary of Economy and Tourism, Roberto Gradillas, and Óscar Gastélum, CEO of the Hermosillo Economic Development Agency, the company announced that the facility operates on approximately 10,000 square meters. The center will enable same-day delivery services for Hermosillo, Nogales, and Ciudad Obregón, while generating around 100 direct jobs for local talent, contributing to the socio-economic development of Hermosillo and surrounding municipalities.

Logistics Infrastructure and Applied Technology

The distribution center has the capacity to process thousands of packages per day, responding efficiently to the growing volume of online purchases in the region. The facility incorporates automation systems, advanced technology, and artificial intelligence to optimize logistics processes, along with strict prevention protocols aligned with international safety standards, ensuring reliable, efficient, and responsible operations.

“The opening of this new distribution center in Hermosillo is another example of our commitment to regional and national economic development. At Mercado Libre, we believe in local talent, the potential of SMEs, and innovation as key growth drivers. This site not only strengthens our delivery network and operational capacity, but also allows us to continue promoting digitalization, quality job creation, and the strengthening of local value chains, helping bring the best of Mexico to the entire country,” said Alejandro Caballero, Senior Director of Marketplace at Mercado Libre Mexico.

Sustainability and Regional Value Chain Impact

The new distribution center also reflects Mercado Libre’s commitment to sustainability as a core operational pillar. The facility operates with LED technology to reduce energy consumption and is evaluating the installation of solar panels in collaboration with local suppliers. Additionally, it implements recycling programs for cardboard, plastic wrap, and pallets, as well as water-saving technologies and responsible workplace practices.

The arrival of the CEDIS is expected to have a positive impact on the local value chain by stimulating logistics services, transportation, supplier networks, technical training, and talent development. It also strengthens the ecosystem for local SMEs and entrepreneurs, who benefit from Mercado Libre’s platform to digitalize operations, expand market reach, and access technological and financial solutions that support business growth.

During the inauguration, Roberto Gradillas, Sonora’s Secretary of Economy and Tourism, stated:

“We are very pleased with the opening of Mercado Libre’s distribution center in Hermosillo, Sonora. This is another result of the vision and commitment promoted by Governor Alfonso Durazo to continue attracting companies to our state. It is a company that brings jobs, significant investment, and, above all, well-being for Sonoran families. Consumers will now have access to a wide range of products delivered faster, in less than 48 hours. We will continue working to position Sonora as a national and international benchmark in e-commerce.”

With this expansion, Mercado Libre reaffirms its commitment to advancing e-commerce in Mexico, promoting digital transformation, supporting SMEs, and actively contributing to the country’s economic and social development.
