McAllen, Texas Sets the Standard with Top Employment Rate in South Texas

McAllen, Texas, has capped off 2023 with the lowest unemployment rate in South Texas, boasting a remarkable 3.8% in November, as reported by the South Texas Manufactures Association (STMA) through Workforce Solutions statistics. This figure stands out in contrast to other cities in the region, including Edinburg, Mission, Laredo, Harlingen, and Brownsville, with McAllen consistently leading the way.

Workforce Dynamics

Between October and November, a noteworthy addition of 7,400 new jobs was recorded across various sectors dedicated to industry, commerce, and services. The statistics reveal 4,700 job placements in October and an additional 2,700 in November. In October, job creation included 100 roles in mining, forestry, and construction, 600 in the logistics sector encompassing transportation, trade, and utilities, 100 in financial activities, and another 100 in professional and business services.

Furthermore, 1,500 jobs were generated in private education and healthcare, 100 in hospitality, and 2,100 in public education and governmental roles.

Diverse Categories

In November, 1,300 jobs were categorized within the logistics sector of commerce, transportation, and public service, 100 in private education and healthcare, 300 in hospitality, 100 in the "other services" category, and 1,000 in government roles, including education.

Mike Willis, Executive Director of STMA, highlighted that the recent unemployment rates in the latter months of 2023 serve as a positive momentum, sustaining optimistic expectations throughout 2024. "Unemployment rates overall showed a slight decrease across South Texas; most signals point towards a steady and continuous improvement in the inflation rate."
