Intuitive Surgical to expand in Mexicali and create 1,500 jobs
April 28, 2026
Intuitive Surgical laid the foundation stone for the third building of its Campus Carranza in Mexicali, Baja California, as part of its growth strategy in Mexico. This new expansion phase includes the creation of 1,500 jobs and the development of more technologically advanced processes, reinforcing the state’s role within the global medical device industry.
Expansion strengthens Baja California’s technology positioning
This project is part of the company’s third stage of growth in the region, where it has operated since 2008. Today, the company has 2,300 employees in Mexicali, consolidating an operational base that has evolved toward higher value-added activities within its global network.
During the event, authorities highlighted that the expansion reflects the capacity of local talent to integrate into advanced manufacturing processes. “Talent is the foundation for the transformation we seek,” said Kurt Honold Morales, Baja California’s Secretary of Economy and Innovation, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the ecosystem between companies, academia, and government.
Specialized talent drives new investment in advanced manufacturing
The company, with a presence in more than 60 countries, is a leader in robot-assisted surgery through technologies such as the da Vinci and Ion systems. Its Mexicali operation is part of a global network focused on optimizing healthcare through less invasive and more precise solutions.
From the company’s perspective, the expansion in Baja California responds to an international consolidation strategy. Bob de Santis, Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer, said growth in Mexicali is key to strengthening the company’s global operations.
In the same regard, Carlos Aguirre Terán, Vice President of Manufacturing for North America, noted that the plant’s evolution reflects confidence in the region. “Today we are one step ahead. I am confident that we will continue growing while maintaining our culture, principles, and values, which create the optimal environment for innovation,” he said.
The campus expansion will not only increase production capacity, but also elevate the technological profile of the operation in Mexico, in line with the global trend toward the relocation of specialized processes. Investments of this type position Baja California as a relevant node in high-precision medical device manufacturing.
Intuitive’s growth in Mexicali confirms Mexico’s role as a strategic platform for high-technology industries, where the combination of specialized talent, infrastructure, and proximity to key markets opens new opportunities for the country’s industrial development.
