GAC Motor confirmed that it will begin operations at its first assembly plant in Mexico during the second half of 2026, becoming the first Chinese automaker to formally establish this type of manufacturing operation in the country.
The project is part of the company’s global One GAC 2.0 strategy, aimed at expanding its international footprint through a model that combines local development, proximity to consumers, and sustained operational growth.
Strategic expansion aligned with Mexico’s automotive platform
According to the company, the decision reflects a long-term commitment to the Mexican market and its automotive industry, which is globally recognized for its manufacturing capabilities, quality standards, and integration into global supply chains.
Establishing a local operation will also allow GAC to strengthen its competitiveness amid evolving global trade conditions, including new tariffs and the reconfiguration of supply chains across different regions.
Flexible assembly for multiple powertrain technologies
The new facility will launch with a flexible assembly model, enabling it to adapt to multiple vehicle types and technologies. The plant will be capable of handling:
- Internal combustion engines
- Hybrid vehicles
- Plug-in hybrids
- Fully electric vehicles
Under this approach, GAC plans to assemble a wide range of segments, including sedans, SUVs, pickups, and crossovers, allowing the company to respond to shifting market demand and expand its product portfolio.
Among the models linked to its strategy in Mexico are GAC EMZOOM, GAC GS8, GAC AION UT, and the upcoming GAC GS7, which is expected to launch in the domestic market.
Building brand positioning and consumer trust
GAC indicated that its positioning in Mexico has been built on two key pillars: vehicle quality and a premium-oriented strategy. Internationally, the brand has received quality awards from J.D. Power for eight consecutive years, reinforcing its reputation in the global automotive industry.
The company noted that establishing local assembly operations will help strengthen consumer confidence and expand its presence in the Mexican market.
Regional platform for Latin America
The new plant is also part of a broader regional strategy for Latin America. According to GAC, the facility will support the development of its operational structure in the region and lay the groundwork for future capabilities in production, research, and commercial expansion.
In its initial phase, production will be focused on meeting domestic demand, in line with a gradual and sustained growth strategy in Mexico.
