Mexico has significant potential to be a supplier to the aerospace sector at a global level , with the trends seen in the sector and the country can contribute to developing them.
The above was commented by Luis Gerardo Lizcano, executive president of the Mexican Federation of the Aerospace Industry , who assured that important parts and components for aircraft, as well as airplanes and helicopters, are currently being developed in Mexico.
He emphasized that, it must be taken into account that when talking about the industry, it is not the same to expose about aeronautics, aerospace, air transport or aviation, since the first ones are aimed at design and manufacturing, while the last two focus on services and usufructs. .
The aerospace industry before the Covid-19 pandemic, had an annual growth of 14% from 2004 to 2019 , which was mostly directed to civil and commercial aeronautics.
Likewise, there were 368 industrial sites, 318 manufacturing sites, 43 maintenance and repair sites, and 40 development and research sites . It should be noted that, in 2019, 9,682 million dollars were exported in the aerospace sector, 80% directed to the United States.
The industry has generated more than 60,000 jobs nationwide, especially in states with the largest number of companies in the sector such as Baja California (97), Sonora (58), Chihuahua (52) and Querétaro (50).
Currently, the following products are manufactured in Mexico: components for propulsion systems, aerostructures, aircraft interiors, landing system components, electrical and electronic systems, precision machining, plastic parts, surface treatments, composite parts, engineering and MRO design and services .
TRENDS
During EXPOMAQ 2022, the executive president of FEMIA assured that the trend in the aerospace future is to make fleets more versatile and have great development in the outer space and air mobility section, for which five trends have been detected in the global aerospace industry and Mexico has the opportunities and challenges to implement them.
“There are several important trends that are taking hold as a result of the pandemic and are having an evolution in technologies based on industry 4.0.”
- Digital thread and intelligent manufacturing: It helps to make better design decisions, with industry 4.0 technologies and it is a great opportunity since they are developments that can be created in the country.
- Supply chain: Aerospace OEMs are restructuring their entire supply chain, making supplier development in this industry difficult, but relocation and nearshoring are creating logistics disruption.
- New Space: Previously, the space industry was financed by government agencies, but the emergence of private companies seeking to expand research and make the space world more accessible is becoming more evident, so it is an opportunity for Mexican suppliers to take advantage of it to this industry.
- Maintenance, repair and work: Growth in passengers and airplanes, for which maintenance processes need to be carried out continuously, especially in air cargo transport.
- Talent development: Increase the interest in STEM careers to meet the needs of human talent required by the sector, with specific skills, for which the educational infrastructure must be improved and take advantage of the demographic bonus.
"Mexico has within the countries have a certain development in the aerospace issue, it has an important demographic bonus and not only that, but it can have many people available with the necessary skills and knowledge, to be able to cooperate in this type of industry and missions, it is it needs better preparation and development of talent,” he assured.
