The beginning of the negotiations of the first Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in the history between Costa Rica and Mexico, consolidates that there is a very mature bilateral relation between both countries, same that has been reflected on their commercial exchange, which is increasingly natural, only last year the market between both countries ended with a flow in favor of Mexico of approximately 1,125 million dollars and 294 million dollars for Costa Rica, throwing a proportion that moves among almost four dollars to one.
“Most of the tariff lines are cleared and that provides certainty; Mexico has invested during the last 17 years, 100 million dollars per year average, while Costa Rica as invested 200 million dollars, therefore we have investments that surpass 15 million dollars per year, this talks in much of the nature between the mobility of both countries,” said in interview for Mexico Industry Andrew Crawford, commercial and of business advisor from the embassy of the Costa Rica Republic and director of Costa Rica Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER, by its Spanish initials) Mexico.
It is worth mentioning that Mexico generates more than 20 thousand jobs in Costa Rica including different branches among which are telecommunications, medical and construction industry mainly.
Among the companies arriving to Costa Rica are KidZania, as well as Cemex in the construction Industry, who previously served a market of more than 60 million dollars in concrete; now enters Cementos Fortaleza from Grupo Carso with an investment of 17 million dollars to show a plant; on the other hand Grupo Lala, as Costa Rica is the main consumer per capita of dairy products in Central America and the Caribbean and even of Mexico, it also invests in a plant to serve the local market.
FEMSA just placed the foundation stone of what would be a large concentrate processing plant that will export from Costa Rica to Central America, South America and Mexico, it will be a 50 million dollar plant with a promise of duplicating that investment in the next 10 years.
Andrew Crawford announced that from September 25th to 27th will be celebrated the Business Summit BTM 2018, which celebrates 20 years; it is important to underline that Mexico was the first and only country to participate at its first edition, which was held in 1999; currently it is attended by 40 countries, 5 continents, more than 300 analysts of supply and investment; this help us showing the world our country is not only a touristic destination, but also a good investment center, since it has great productive activity by currently exporting more than 4,300 products to 150 destinations worldwide, “we are a country that understood that it is necessary to open to the world to take advantage of all the wellness offered by foreign trade,” he ended.
One of the characteristics that make this event so effective is the opportunity provided to visitors of knowing what they could find at the Summit, “it is important for us to have clarity, before your trip you know with whom are you going to talk, under which interests and which expectations you can have of establishing a relationship,” said Andrew.
It is about a specific business summit which for two days in which it
takes place, each visitor has a worktable and a program with 30 minutes
meetings previously settled, creating certainty of establishing relations of
interest with high possibility of closing successful negotiations.
Costa Rica expects to become the fourth country in entering the OCTE, it is expected to be in 2019, since they have fulfilled more than half of the fulfillment forums demanded by member countries, this will provide the country another growing access not only commercial, but in many subjects.
