In a recent meeting held in Donna, Texas, Humberto Martínez, President of the National Council of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry (Index), joined local officials to discuss the significant advantages offered by the Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge. The meeting aimed to highlight the bridge's potential benefits for facilitating trade between Mexico and the United States.

Mayor David Moreno, City Manager Carlos Yerena, Director of Public Utilities Jonas González, and Commissioner Jesse Jackson participated in the meeting alongside President Martínez. They collectively emphasized the importance of the bridge project in enhancing regional trade flow and fostering economic development.

The Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge project is set to implement various features such as agile trade exchange, exclusive lanes for cargo units, and x-ray inspection capabilities. These features are expected to streamline the movement of goods and strengthen connectivity to industrial parks, logistics centers, and exporting companies in northern Tamaulipas and southern Texas.

One of the key highlights of the project is the opening of the bridge to the crossing of empty cargo units. This initiative, part of the first phase of a comprehensive development plan, is expected to commence from south to north starting in 2024. The primary objective is to facilitate the transit of trucks carrying cargo, thereby improving the efficiency of cross-border trade.

In terms of funding, the project has a budget of $100 million, with 80% of the funds provided by the city of Donna and the remaining 20% contributed by the United States Customs and Border Protection office (CBP). This investment underscores the commitment of both local and federal authorities to the success of the bridge project and its potential impact on economic growth.

Donna, Texas authorities expressed their eagerness to collaborate closely with various industries established in Mexico through Index. They aim to attract new industries and warehouses, thereby stimulating economic development and creating new job opportunities in the region.
