DHL Express expands in Querétaro; invests 120 million dollars in its domestic air hub

“DHL loves Querétaro”, said Antonio Arranz Lara, CEO of DHL Express México , when announcing an investment of 120 million dollars in the expansion of its domestic air hub , located in the vicinity of the audited compound of the Querétaro International Airport (AIQ ), in collaboration with Terminal Logistics (TL Kapital).

With this investment, DHL Express will have an extension of 30,000 square meters (m2) with the capacity to operate 41,000 pieces per hour with fully automated facilities, making it its most advanced hub in  Latin America, positioning itself above the one that currently exists in Mexico City from 2024, explained Arranz Lara.

“DHL loves Querétaro. With this announcement, DHL is committing to stay in Querétaro and in Mexico for the next 20 years," said Arranz Lara, who highlighted the company's confidence in operating in the territory for 20 years.

With this expansion, DHL gives way to the creation of 200 jobs with high technology. In total, in Querétaro, DHL will go from 400 to 600 collaborators.

“The people who are going to manage this fully automated hub are going to be Mexicans who are going to be trained over the next year in Mexico. All the technological knowledge is going to stay in Mexico and we are going to develop it in Querétaro”, he explained.

He highlighted the importance of developing this type of knowledge to compete at the time of nearshoring and close the digital gap in Mexico.

DHL started operations in Querétaro in 2010, with an area of ​​2,319 square meters, which was expanded to 10,500 m2 in 2014. Currently, the DHL Express hub at AIQ allows 12 daily national flights and one international flight.

At the time, Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero, Secretary of Sustainable Development of the state, specified that the infrastructure of the AIQ controlled cargo area has 20,000 m2 of warehouse, storage, maneuvering yards, refrigerated chamber, 50 loading and unloading positions. .

He explained that the movement of air cargo in April was 6,000 tons, an increase of 34% compared to the same month in 2022. While in the accumulated January-April 25,818 tons have been transferred, 11.4% more than the same period of 2022 .

He specified that this airport has the ARFF category, level 4D; five vocations: private and commercial passenger aviation, cargo aviation, MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul), aviation industry, as well as technical education and research and innovation services. It is also authorized to receive aircraft such as the B747-8 and function as an alternative to the A380-800.
