The state of Coahuila took a key step in its industrial diversification strategy by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Arizona State University (ASU), focused on developing specialized talent for the semiconductor industry—one of the most strategic sectors globally. The agreement was formalized during Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas’ working tour in Washington, D.C., as part of his international agenda to strengthen the state’s competitiveness.

The governor noted that the agreement represents an opportunity to integrate Coahuila into a high value-added industry. “Just as Coahuila has more than 50 years of experience in sectors such as automotive, dairy, and steel, Arizona has spent decades developing a strong semiconductor ecosystem,” he said, emphasizing the relevance of the agreement in driving technological innovation and industrial development.

Academic and industrial collaboration to attract investment

The semiconductor industry has become a central pillar of the digital economy, as it is essential for the production of electronic devices, vehicles, medical equipment, and artificial intelligence technologies. In this context, the agreement will strengthen collaboration between academia and industry through training programs, applied research, and technology transfer aligned with the needs of the productive sector.

Through this initiative, Coahuila seeks to consolidate itself as an attractive destination for high-tech investment, in line with the relocation of supply chains across North America. The strategy includes the development of specialized human capital, which will help attract companies in the sector and integrate the state into global supply chains.

Talent development for the industries of the future

The governor emphasized that the agreement opens new opportunities for young people in the state. “We are building bridges so that Coahuila can consolidate itself as a relevant player in the industry of the future,” he said, noting that talent development will allow young people to access better-paid jobs in technology sectors.

The signing of the agreement also included Luis Olivares Martínez, Secretary of Economy, and Sofía Delgadillo Díaz, Director of Pro Coahuila, who agreed that this collaboration strengthens the state’s economic development strategy. The focus is on promoting workforce specialization and increasing Coahuila’s competitiveness compared to other industrial hubs.

This progress positions Coahuila on a growth path based on productive diversification, with a medium- and long-term vision. Its focus on semiconductors reinforces the transition toward industries with greater technological complexity and opens the possibility of consolidating a more resilient industrial ecosystem connected to global dynamics.
