In an unprecedented effort to strengthen trade and border relations between Mexico and the United States, the Border Trade Alliance-Mexico (BTA Mexico), a private non-profit organization, has officially established its new Public Policy Committee. This Committee aims to promote government actions and, where necessary, legislative changes to enhance and deepen trade and infrastructure relations between the two nations.
The BTA Mexico has been a key player in advocating for solutions to the economic, trade, and infrastructure issues directly affecting bilateral relations at the Mexico-U.S. border. With the creation of this new Committee, BTA Mexico aims not only to represent the private sector involved in border trade but also to positively influence the formation of public policies at both federal and state levels along the northern border.
This Committee will be led by Arturo de las Fuentes, president of the company Cruces y Puentes Internacionales, who has extensive experience in the public sector and binational infrastructure issues. De las Fuentes will be joined by a highly experienced team in public policies: Astrid Salazar, an expert in economic promotion; Lucia Posada, head of public relations; and Eduardo Trejo, responsible for legislative liaison.
Strategic Objectives of the Committee
Under the presidency of Joaquín Spamer, this new Committee has several specific objectives:
Promotion and Attraction of Investments: Leveraging the advantages of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the trends of Nearshoring and Ally-shoring, this Committee will seek to foster investments in the northern border region.
Modernization of Connectivity: The modernization and expansion of binational crossings and corridors will be a priority for the Committee to expedite trade exchange on both sides of the border. Additionally, it will promote improvements in customs and warehousing infrastructure.
Regulation of Cross-Border Trade: Addressing the extensive regulations governing cross-border trade, including infrastructure, transportation, environment, security, customs, and immigration, will be a core focus of the Committee.
Process Improvement and New Technologies: The Committee will push for improvements in foreign trade processes, intensive use of new technologies, and the training of inspection and security personnel to make international crossings more efficient and faster.
In addition to this new initiative by BTA Mexico, the Committee will promote collaboration with other business organizations with similar objectives. These synergies and joint efforts on issues of common interest will be crucial to encourage public policies that benefit border trade.
The United States is Mexico’s main trading partner, with 80% of Mexican exports destined for the northern neighbor. The northern border states are the main engine of Mexican export economy, representing about 60% of the national total. In this context, the work of BTA Mexico’s new Public Policy Committee will be crucial to ensuring that this relationship continues to prosper and adapts to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
Thus, BTA Mexico reaffirms its commitment to being a proactive organization and a positive influence in promoting public policies that benefit both Mexico and the United States, thereby strengthening one of the world's most important economic links.
