The travel time between Brownsville, Texas, and Monterrey, Nuevo León, will be reduced to less than two hours with the launch of a new direct flight connecting Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport and Monterrey General Mariano Escobedo International Airport. This international connection, operated by the Mexican company Aerus, will be available starting in September, featuring two daily flights: one from Brownsville to Monterrey and another from Monterrey to Brownsville. The aircraft, with a capacity for nine passengers, will serve over 6,500 passengers annually.
Javier Herrera, CEO of Aerus, announced that ticket sales would commence on July 8, allowing passengers to plan their trips in advance. "As a Mexican company, we are expanding our operations to the United States through the Brownsville-Monterrey route. We are confident that there will be high demand and that we will soon need to increase both capacity and flight frequency."
First International Route
The announcement of this new air route was made at Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport in Brownsville, Texas. Ángel Ramos, Director of Aviation, highlighted in an interview with Mexico Industry that the Brownsville-Monterrey route is the first international one since the terminal's renovation. He emphasized that overall mobility is expected to reach 300,000 passengers in 2024. "This flight from Brownsville to Monterrey will allow us to connect families, friends, and businesses, significantly reducing travel time, and promoting tourism, business, and economic development opportunities."
John Cowen, the Mayor of Brownsville, underscored the economic opportunities this air connection will bring, opening a new gateway to northeastern Mexico from southern Texas. "Our city has a strong commercial relationship with Monterrey. For example, the Port of Brownsville has many clients and companies from this city. Additionally, we frequently receive tourists and visitors to South Padre Island, as well as shoppers and hotel guests, so this air connection will positively impact the economy and create jobs."
City commissioners of Brownsville and Judith Arrieta, the Consul of Mexico in Brownsville, attended the event as guests of honor. They all agreed that this connection will also strengthen the binational relationship between Mexico and the United States, promoting not only tourism but also trade and cultural relations.
