Key indicators of the automotive industry in Mexico
The automotive industry is the second most important pillar for the Mexican economy; In addition, it is one of the main producing countries in this sector worldwide.
Mexico is the fourth largest producer of auto parts worldwide
Currently, the automotive sector generates almost 4% of the national GDP and 18.3% of the manufacturing GDP and, of this last percentage, 8% corresponds to the auto parts industry and the rest to light and heavy vehicles, according to information from the National Auto Parts Industry (INA).
Mexico is the fourth largest producer of auto parts worldwide. At the end of 2021, the national auto parts industry displaced Germany to fifth place.
Based on information from the INA, our country is the main supplier of auto parts to the United States.
In Mexico there are more than 2,000 companies dedicated to the auto parts sector and 26 research and development centers, which house more than 15,000 engineers. Some of the companies based in the country are Aptiv, Bosch, Draxton, Continental, Magna, Hitachi, Borgwarner, NSK, Brose, GKN, among many others.
The main states in auto parts production are Coahuila, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Guanajuato and Querétaro.
Jobs generated by the automotive sector
This industry generates more than two million jobs, plus the jobs that are derived from vehicle maintenance and all the items that the sector entails, that is, more than five million jobs.
Production of light and cargo vehicles
Our country is the seventh largest producer of light vehicles in the world, the fourth largest producer of cargo vehicles and the fourth largest exporter of light, cargo and passenger vehicles.
In addition, it highlights that the country is the first exporter of trucks in the world and the main generator of Foreign Direct Investment in Mexico.
