On the occasion of World Environment Day, Arca Continental and Coca-Cola announced an investment of 5.1 million pesos for the implementation of infiltration projects in the Guadiana region of Durango. These initiatives aim to reclaim up to 238 megaliters of water annually, equivalent to filling 83 Olympic-sized swimming pools, the companies explained in a statement. They underscored their commitment to improving water security in the country and promoting environmental conservation practices.
The projects will be carried out in collaboration with the Mexican Fauna Protection (Profauna) and the Allies for Water platform. "Our common purpose is to enhance the country's water security through projects focused on access and supply of the resource, while strengthening the actions of local inhabitants and community organizations to ensure a proper understanding of their communities' needs and opportunities," they detailed.
This investment by food and beverage industry companies in Mexico adds to other initiatives aimed at addressing water challenges, with three key objectives: protecting watersheds, providing access to water in communities where they operate, and improving productivity efficiency. "This partnership with Profauna focuses on creating large-scale change by promoting biodiversity conservation, implementing an environmental education program, and undertaking soil projects to enhance vegetation cover."
The companies aim to replenish at least 100% of the water used in beverage production by 2030. In a more immediate goal set for 2028, they are committed to providing clean water to three million Mexicans.
