APM Terminals Mexico announced an investment of more than MXN 3.2 billion to modernize its container terminal in Puerto Progreso, Yucatán, with a 19-year plan aimed at transforming the port into an international logistics hub. The project includes advanced infrastructure, state-of-the-art equipment, and a strong commitment to renewable energy, in addition to the creation of more than 1,300 direct and indirect jobs.
Comprehensive port modernization plan
Beatriz Yera Selbaine, Managing Director of APM Terminals Mexico, formalized the memorandum of understanding with the Yucatán Secretariat of Economy and Labor (SETY), in the presence of Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena and representatives of the Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine. The initiative includes a staged modernization over the next 19 years, with the goal of positioning Progreso as a benchmark in port efficiency and innovation.
The plan includes world-class infrastructure, digital management systems, and specialized equipment to streamline operations, reduce logistics costs, and strengthen the competitiveness of imports and exports. A key sustainability component will also be integrated through the use of renewable energy sources to increase the port’s energy efficiency.
Economic and logistical impact for Yucatán
The APM Terminals investment not only reinforces Progreso’s role as the gateway to southeastern Mexico, but will also generate direct jobs in port operations, maintenance, and specialized services, along with more than 1,100 indirect jobs in transportation, supply, and local commerce.
With this project, Yucatán consolidates its position as a reliable investment destination, offering an environment of security, social stability, and a highly skilled workforce. The strategy aligns with regional value chains and opens new opportunities for local SMEs engaged in foreign trade.
The modernization will strengthen Mexico’s maritime connection with the Americas and Europe, creating competitive advantages for agribusiness, manufacturing, and logistics products, while ensuring a faster, more efficient, and sustainable port.
