Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest $5 billion to develop a data center in Querétaro and has launched the $300,000 AWS InCommunities Fund.
Through this fund, Amazon aims to support local groups, schools, and organizations in initiating new community projects.
“This launch marks an important step as we continue to expand our infrastructure and deliver global innovation in machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and other advanced technologies for our customers,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, AWS Vice President of Infrastructure Services.
“Today’s launch represents a major milestone in Mexico’s digital transformation. AWS’s investment of over $5 billion will strengthen Mexico’s technological infrastructure and create new opportunities for innovation, economic growth, digital inclusion, and job creation,” stated Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s Secretary of Economy.
The construction and ongoing operation of AWS’s new region will contribute approximately $10 billion to Mexico’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and support an average of over 7,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually across external businesses.
These jobs, which will include construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and other roles, will be part of AWS’s supply chain in Mexico.
This new region will allow AWS customers with data residency preferences to securely store their content, achieve even lower latency, and meet the demand for cloud services across Latin America.
Active AWS customers in Mexico include BBVA, Becle, Digital@FEMSA, Grupo Lala, Grupo Salinas, Hospital Ángeles, Jüsto, Konfio, Laureate Education, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), SkyAlert, the states of Guanajuato, Jalisco, and Michoacán, Stori, and many others innovating on AWS.
