Pirelli will invest 114 million euros in the Guanajuato plant

Within the framework of the tenth anniversary of the Pirelli  Silao plant, the start of an investment of 114 million euros was announced , as part of the industrial plan for the 2021-2022 to 2025 cycle. 

The construction of the factory is planned to be completed by the end of 2023 and aims to increase production at the Guanajuato site. 

Marco Tronchetti Provera, executive vice president and CEO of Pirelli , said that the investment confirms the strategic importance of the plant and will have an increase in production capacity of more than one million pieces, giving a total of 8.5 million tires by 2025. when fully operational.

Specifically, the production area will have an expansion of 220,000 m2 and the products will have an improvement in manufacturing, the investment will also create 400 new jobs for a total of 3,200 employees when fully operational.

The manager mentioned that the Silao plant has made an important contribution to the success of Pirelli 's global strategy , in order to become a leader in the high-value segment.

“When we chose Silao and the Guanajuato region as the location for a new plant 10 years ago, our expectations were very high. Today I am happy to say that we have achieved our goals and that the factory and the people who work there have exceeded our expectations,” he said.

In addition, he announced that the Silao plant is one of the most technologically advanced in the group and in the short term it will also house an R&D Center.

Claudio Zanardo, president and CEO of Pirelli North America , added that Mexico is a strategic area for all its activities in North and Central America and with this investment it will increase its technological and industrial competitiveness. 

Located within Guanajuato Puerto Interior , considered one of the main logistics centers in Mexico, the Italian tire company opened the plant in 2012 to serve the local and North American markets.

In the last ten years it has grown from a capacity of around 1.5 million tires and a workforce of 300 people at the end of 2012 to a capacity of 7.2 million tires at the end of 2022 and around 2,800 employees. 

Its production is focused on the high-value segment, producing high-performance and ultra-high-performance tires for electric vehicles, SUVs, and light trucks.

The Mexican factory has developed Pirelli's most innovative solutions, such as Cyber ​​Tyre , the Pirelli Noise Canceling System™ and RFID writing geared towards tire tracking to provide product information to the entire logistics chain.

Equipped with the most advanced production processes of the group, the Mexican factory has implemented the principles of Industry 4.0 in recent years , in addition to a growing commitment to caring for the environment, adopting international standards that promote the saving of electricity and water. , and ensure the recycling of plant waste.

The commitment announced today raises Pirelli 's investment in the Mexican plant since its foundation to more than 800 million euros and is added to the announcement in May 2022 of the creation of the first Research and Development Center of the Italian company in Mexico, which joins the 13 existing centers around the world. In addition, innovation is an essential element of the strategy and the company annually invests around 6% of its revenue from high-value products in R&D and has more than 6,700 patents.

The ceremony also included the participation of Luigi De Chiara, Italian ambassador to Mexico; Claudio Zanardo, President and CEO of Pirelli North America and Paolo Benea, CEO and General Director of Pirelli Neumáticos de México .



As part of the tenth anniversary of its foundation, Pirelli Mexico published a book entitled " Pirelli, the culture of innovation ", edited by Trilce Ediciones and produced in coordination with the Fondazione Pirelli foundation and the material housed in the company's historical archives.

“This is a way of commemorating the local legacy of a company that in January 2022 celebrated 150 years of activity with worldwide celebrations. The book covers the stages of development of the Silao plant, its rapid growth, its deep roots in the territory and among local communities, and Pirelli's contribution to the development of the State of Guanajuato”, Claudio Zanardo, president and CEO of Pirelli North America .

The celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Silao plant ties in with the 150th anniversary of the founding of the company in Milan, where on January 28, 1872, Giovanni Battista Pirelli founded a rubber factory that would become one of the most innovative and technologically advanced companies in the world.
