Ford begins production of its first electric car in Mexico

Ford of Mexico began production of the Mustang Mach-E 2021 at the assembly and stamping plant of Cuautitlán Izcalli , State of Mexico, being the first electric SUV of the company produced in the country for the world. 

With the above, a new era began for the global automotive firm, which held this event during the 56th anniversary of the Mexican plant .

The Cuautitlán Izcalli factory -where the Ford Fiesta was produced from 2010 to 2019- had to carry out a one-year adaptation process to integrate the new technologies, as well as meet all the requirements to have the complete equipment for the production of the electric vehicle . 

At the same time, the staff received training that allowed them to know each of the processes for the creation of this model, its technology, design and engineering to deliver the most innovative vehicle, with the highest level of quality characteristic of Mexican talent.

Héctor Pérez, CEO of Ford of Mexico, stated that the country is perfect to lead this transformation, thanks to the capacity and experience that Mexicans have demonstrated in the design, engineering and manufacture of the brand's products.

"We have been selected to revolutionize the history of Ford with the brand's first electric SUV , just as we revolutionized the automotive industry in the country 95 years ago, and 56 years after celebrating the inauguration of our Cuautitlán plant," he mentioned.

In the manufacturing process, updates and changes had to be made during the adaptation process for the development of the final structure of Mustang Mach-E:

Stamping: The dies weigh between 20 and 40 tons, it has a crane type gripper and two hooks capable of lifting up to 50 tons, in addition, there are 5 presses of between 1,000 and 2,500 tons of pressure to mold the sheets and it is the first plant to implement an anti-collision and anti-pendulum system in the cranes.

Bodywork: Cuautitlán is the first Ford plant globally to use the artificial vision system . In addition, it has 190 Fanuc-type robots with state-of-the-art dimensional location systems.

Painting: The unit is cleaned with Zirconium and prepared for the application of Ecoat, which gives it resistance to corrosion at the same time that it gives the necessary leveling to the surface to receive the paint. Similarly, a new process of liquid application of noise insulators is incorporated.

Assembly: The area is divided into two parts: Trim , where the interiors of the unit are installed, and Chassis that handles the exterior parts, as well as mechanical ones. The new line of high-voltage batteries has 75% automatic processes . Finally, 7 hours and 247 people are required for each shift for a vehicle to be completed at a rate of 20 units per hour.

"Ford de Mexico and the Cuautitlán Izcalli plant carry Mustang DNA since having produced this model in the 80s, and now with the Mustang Mach-E we return to the production of the family of its most iconic vehicle," said Enrique. Araiza, director of manufacturing. 

Ever since the original Mustang  took the world by storm in 1964, it quickly managed to represent the best of the spirit of freedom, progress, fast performance and a touch of rebellion.

Now with the Mustang Mach-E , Ford's first electric SUV , in extended-reach all-wheel drive configurations, it goes from 332 to 459 horsepower. Also, the electric pony will integrate for the first time some technologies and driving modes that make it the most innovative of Ford.

"As part of our evolution, over the past several years Ford's vision has been completely transformed, which is why we announced a year ago the arrival of our first electric SUV," he added.

The manufacture of Ford's first electric SUV also commemorates the importance of the country for the brand at a global level and, above all, the 95 years of presence in Mexico, which is reinforced by the innovation that reaches Mexico to transform the mobility of the world .
